Chicago bungalows make up some one third of homes in the city. They are
especially popular right now because of Mayor Daley’s Bungalow initiative,
which offers buyers special mortgages and tax credits for rehabilitation.
Additional resources, such as workshops on wood restoration and
landscaping are also part of the initiative. Bungalows must be certified
as faithful to the original character of the building in order to be
eligible for the program.
Bungalows in Chicago have a unique charm. Unlike their California
counterparts, they are narrower so as to fit on tight city blocks, tend to
be constructed of fire-retardant brick, and lack wide-open porches.
